Dear Radburn Neighbors:
Following June’s announcement that she was taking
part in the litigation for Radburn democracy, more than 500
residents – a record number -- voted in the election
in which June won her second term. In January, however, something
less than 90 residents voted at the Citizens’ Association
meeting as to whether the democracy litigants should be asked
to withdraw their suit. About 50 felt the litigants should
be asked to withdraw; about 40 voted no. I have to say the
whole resolution seemed backwards to me. Why wasn’t
the Radburn Association asked to grant open nominations for
the Board of Trustees? If the Radburn community were ever
granted democracy, I’m sure the democracy plaintiffs
would waste no time dropping their litigation.
We do not live in a Fiefdom inhabited by Lords and Ladies
(the trustees and manager) and by serfs (the dues-paying residents).
This is AMERICA – and we are entitled to a say in our
community – our home – our Radburn. We all owe
a deep debt of gratitude to the litigants who had the courage
to stand up and be counted against an organization that refuses
to accept the basic tenets of democracy. Surely the incandescent
glow in the harbor that illuminates Lady Liberty and kindles
the fire of freedom in minds throughout the world cannot be
extinguished in Radburn.
